New rehabilitation programme

3rd May 2018

Caring Together partners have welcomed that Everybody Leisure has been awarded National Lottery funding to keep people mobile by delivering a new rehabilitation programme called ESCAPE- Pain in Cheshire East.

The grant was awarded by the Health Innovation Network in conjunction with Arthritis Research UK as part of Sport England’s Active Ageing Fund. It allows Everybody Leisure to deliver a six-week, evidenced-based rehabilitation programme designed to reduce pain and disability for people with chronic joint pain.

Over the six weeks, patients will receive:

  • Information, advice and support from qualified ESCAPE-Pain instructors to help them better manage chronic joint pain and lead a more active life
  • An invitation to a group exercise programme, twice a week over six weeks, tailored to individual needs
  • A chance to socialise with and learn from other people living with osteoarthritis, enabling participants to carry out normal activities, manage symptoms and be more active.

ESCAPE-Pain reduces pain while improving physical function, mental wellbeing, self-confidence and self-esteem. The programme is available for anyone aged over 55 who has had osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip pain for at least six months and has been doing less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly but is independently mobile and able to carry out regular exercise. Participants should also be committed to taking part in two classes per week over six weeks, returning for a final session in week 12.

ESCAPE-Pain starts this month (May 2018) and is available as follows in Eastern Cheshire:

  • Holmes Chapel Community Centre, Mondays and Wednesdays, 1.30pm-2.30pm
  • Macclesfield Leisure Centre, Mondays and Fridays, 2.30-3.30pm.

Donna Williamson, health and wellbeing manager at Everybody Leisure, said: “It’s a great opportunity for us to support those with chronic pain in being more active and improving their quality of life. We are delighted to be working with commissioners and other partners across Cheshire, rolling out the programme within community settings.”

As spaces are limited, prospective participants should contact the Everybody Leisure  team as soon as possible on 01270 685589 or by emailing
